The Yankees have acquired 27-year old switch-hitting 1B/OF Nick Swisher and 22-year old righty reliever Kaneoka Texeira from the White Sox for Wilson Betemit, Jeff Marquez and Jhonny Nunez. Swisher is coming off a horrible season for the White Sox but he’s still a talented player. He played in 153 games for the White Sox last season and he was 109 for 497 (.219 avg, .742 OPS) with 84 runs scored, 24 homers and 69 RBIs. The White Sox were probably jumping for joy that they could ditch the overrated Swisher. Swisher has now played in 611 games in his major league career and he is 515 for 2,114 (.244 avg, .805 OPS) with 353 runs scored, 104 homers and 324 RBIs. Swisher allegedly has a good eye as he has walked 342 times in his major league career but that also comes with 539 whiffs. If the Yankees can get Swisher more aggressive with the bat he might put up some big time power numbers in 2009. 22-year old righty reliever Kaneoka Texeira really pitched well in the minors for the White Sox last season. He worked in 51 games (0 starts) in A+AA ball last season and he was 6-3 with 21 saves, a 1.33 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP.
27-year old switch hitting infielder Wilson Betemit was nothing more than a utility man in his time with the Yankees. He played in 87 games for the Yankees last season and he was 50 for 189 (.265 avg, .718 OPS) with 24 runs scored, 6 homers and 25 RBIs. He doesn’t have much plate discipline however as he only walked 6 times last season while whiffing 56 times. In two years with the Yanks, Betemit played in 124 games in which he was 69 for 273 (.253 avg) with 35 runs scored, 10 homers and 49 RBIs. 24-year old righty starting pitcher Jeff Marquez was the #7 rated Yankees’ prospect heading into the 2008 season according to Baseball America. He pitched in 19 games (18 starts) in Rookie+AA+AAA ball last season and he was 8-8 with a 4.47 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. 22-year old righty Jhonny Nunez came over from the Nationals last season in the Alberto Gonzalez trade. Nunez was the #25 rated prospect in the Nationals’ system heading into 2008 according to Baseball America. Nunez pitched in 39 games (17 starts) in A+AA ball last season and he was 3-8 with a 4.10 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. Nunez does have a very strong arm as evidenced by the fact that he whiffed 124 batters in only 116.1 innings last season.
The Yankees win this trade as Swisher could be helpful in 2009 and they didn’t give up too much to get him.
