The New York Yankees let three pitchers go

The Yankees decided that they didn’t have room on their 40-man roster for Darrell Rasner, Matt DeSalvo or T.J. Beam so they didn’t tender any on them a contract making them all free-agents. Beam has already signed a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Darrell Rasner pitched in 6 games last season for the Yankees and he was 1-3 with a 4.01 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. Rasner has pitched in 17 games in his major league career and he is 4-5 with a 4.13 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. DeSalvo was a rookie last season and he had a hard time. He pitched in 7 games for the Yanks and he was 1-3 with a 6.18 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP. T.J. Beam also had a rough time as a rookie last season. He pitched in 20 games last season for the Yanks and he was 2-0 with a 8.50 ERA and a 1.78 WHIP. The only one of these pitchers the Yanks could possibly miss is Rasner who has been a decent pitcher in the majors.

LaTroy Hawkins signs a 1-year deal with the New York Yankees

Blogged under Front Page, Bloglockers, Arrivals & Departures by chinmusic on Monday 10 December 2007 at 6:37 pm

The New York Yankees have signed righty reliever LaTroy Hawkins to a 1-year, $3.75 million dollar contract. The 34-year old pitched pretty well for the Rockies last season as he worked in 62 games and he was 2-5 with a 3.42 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. He has pitched much better as a reliever in his major league career so his career stats are still skewed because of all of the innings he had as a starter. Hawkins has now pitched in 631 games (98 starts) and he is 56-76 with 75 saves, a 4.68 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. This was a good move for the Yanks.

The New York Yankees designate OF Bronson Sardinha for assignment

The Yanks needed a roster spot so they decided to designate 24-year old lefty swinging OF Bronson Sardinha for assignment. He played in 10 games for the Yanks last season and he was 3 for 9 (.333 avg, .750 OPS) with 6 runs scored and 2 RBIs. It will be interesting to see if Sardinha clears waivers and returns to the Yanks or not. I have a feeling that they will lose him on waivers if the Yanks can’t trade him.

The New York Yankees acquire Jonathan Albaladejo from the Nationals

The Yankees have acquired 25 year old righty reliever Jonathan Albaladejo from the Nationals for righty starter Tyler Clippard. Albaladejo pitched in 14 games last season for the Nationals and he was 1-1 with a 1.88 ERA and a 0.63 WHIP. He has a much bigger upside than Clippard does as he started 6 games last season for the Yanks and he was 3-1 with a 6.33 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP. This appears to be a good deal for the Yanks as Clippard was very far down the depth chart for them.

Blogged under Front Page, Bloglockers, Arrivals & Departures by chinmusic on Tuesday 4 December 2007 at 12:42 pm

Andy Phillips has been designated for assignment despite coming off the best season of his major league career. Phillips played in 61 games last season for the Yankees and he was 54 for 185 (.292 avg, .711 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 2 homers and 25 RBIs. He has now played in 203 games in his major league career and he is 121 for 479 (.253 avg, .678 OPS) with 65 runs scored, 11 homers and 60 RBIs. He will likely find another job in the majors for next season.
